DEB
DESIGN PROMPT / CHALLENGE
A mobile app designed to help patients with auditory and motor disabilities communicate in sign language among each other and staff. High turnover has additionally lead to inconsistency in American Sign Language (ASL) training for employees. With Deb, both sets of users will be able to intuitively and accessibly engage with ASL learning.
DEFINING THE PROBLEM
This Residential Developmental Center serves those with developmental and sensory disabilities, requiring them to communicate primarily through a simple form for sign language based on American Sign Language (ASL). A notable percentage of patients also face motor skills disabilities, making it difficult to perform advanced hand and finger motions. An additional challenge they face is a high employee turn-over rate, making it difficult to train new staff members the required 255 words to pass a competency exam and continuous yearly assessment.
How can patients most effectively communicate among each other and with staff to improve the livelihood of the patients?
SOLUTION
I designed a mobile platform that gives both patients and staff the opportunity to learn ASL in a simple way that follows Mobile Accessibility Guidelines. Using VUI and video, this app will allow users to visually engage from multiple views to enhance learning.
KEY INSIGHTS
- High turn-over rate results in training pain points
- Patients who are learning ASL also face motor challenges
- Technology and learning materials are outdated
User Needs & Opportunity Areas
Out of 110 patients between 21-78+, 78% fall in the range of severe to profound mental retardation and 53% are nonverbal.
