INTRODUCTION

What Is Catalyst?

Catalyst UX is a UX design agency based in Silicon Valley, with offices around the country, specializing in medical and life sciences, financial, and digital transformation. Catalyst combines familiarity and innovation to deliver user focused and world class products for their clients.

Lessons Learned

– Creating a framework is important for unbiased and systematic decision making. By creating a framework, it will lay out a rationale for why you got to the solution best for the user and their needs.

– How to discuss projects at a high level, especially when it comes to speaking with higher level designers to maximize their time and with clients so they understand and connect from a business standpoint.

– Design systems make for fast prototyping, consistent design, and easy development handover.

– How to work remotely. This internship was pre-pandemic, but the entire team worked remotely across the world. It was a great experience learning how to communicate and maximize productivity within our team and with our clients.

NDA

Due to an NDA agreement, I am limited in what I can share, but I am happy to chat or grab a (Zoom or masked up and socially distanced) coffee to share more about my experience with Catalyst.

Nonetheless, the content below is still valuable in what I took away from this internship.

DESIGN PROCESS

Learned about the design life cycle through a series of projects. At Catalyst, this is called the 16-point Unified UX methodology.

SOLUTIONS

What Was I Working On?

Catalyst had me join in on a series of four projects throughout my internship. I had the opportunity to have a hand in each of the three industries that Catalyst specializes in.

I primarily worked with Medical & Life Sciences solutions. That being said, a few of these projects also required us to think in a digitally transformative way. These companies looked to push their products in a cutting-edge way by incorporating technology like AI innovation into their software to better assist users in their journey and track information more precisely.

Problems & Deliverables

Patient Onboarding & Drug Adherence

How to onboard and adhere patients with chronic illnesses to their treatment plans.

Bridging the gap between patient needs and support. A software that would give the patient the opportunity to feel supported by their care team, community, and allow them to feel like they have a better understanding of both the diagnosis and treatment. On the other end, the care team will have better insight on treatment progression and more data utilizing AI technology. Accountability by daily tracking, the feel and sense of connection through community, diagnosis comprehension to better adhere, and an all in one spot to better manage the treatment.

Telehealth Innovation

How to virtually assess and onboard patients with sleep apnea.

We designed a platform that would assess patients for sleep apnea and then guide them through telehealth consultation based on their results. Based on the results, next steps to onboard a patient onto a sleep care device and treatment plan will follow.

System Design

The pathology process is extremely detail oriented and intricate in the steps being performed. The challenge was to update the system visually, enhance the efficiency of the process to gain more accurate data, but also keep the familiarity of the process in the new design for pathologist to continue their workflow intuitively.

We created a workflow for pathologists mimicking the previous functionality, but with a modernized look and more intuitive interface. This project really challenged us to focus on enhancing the user journey without losing elements or adding unnecessary new elements. With the scope of this project, it was critical to make sure we were created a strong design system that made for a smooth transition to development.

Creating Visual Efficiency for Clients and Account Managers

The previous system needed updating to better represent data to managers and advisors in the wealth management industry.

More data visualization crafted by our team and focused groups, enhanced search engine, and filtering properties for in-depth spreadsheets.

TAKEAWAYS

With a UX team of this caliber, I was able to learn a lot and gain a lot of experience in a company that produces high quality designs at a rapid pace, giving me a lot of experience in the design process. With that, I learned that not only are the details important but also creating a strong design system makes prototyping both faster and more consistent.

At the end of the day, what’s most important is the user. Not only understanding but empathizing with their needs and goals has to be clearly established to get the best end product.

That is all I am able to share with you at this time. If you are curious about this internship, please do reach out!
